ABOUT THE workshop

An international workshop concerning the Protestant church architecture in Europe will be held between 28.11.2013 and 2.12.2013 in Vienna. It is considered as a part of realization of the “Protestant church architecture of the 16th-18th centuries in Europe” research project. During the workshop, the most outstanding researchers in the research field from all around the world are going to discuss the following issues:
1.    Theoretical foundations of the Protestant church architecture of the 16th-18th centuries.
2.    Church dedication sermons as a source for interpretation of the early modern temple's architectural structure and its ideological plan.
3.    Characteristic of early modern Protestant church architecture in different countries of Europe (e.g. sources of inspiration, model buildings and their replicas, typical fittings).
4.    Common architectural forms and ideas in different regions (e.g. churches on the ground plan of traverse-rectangle, circle, regular polygon, Greek cross, L-shape).
5.    “Dialogue of denominations” in early modern ecclesiastical architecture (e.g. Problem of pilaster churches, and cruciform churches. References to the Solomon's Temple as well as to the antique architecture and, above everything else, to the Pantheon).
6.    State and needs of research on Protestant church architecture of the 16th-18th centuries in Europe and in overseas mission territories.
