Willmann and others. Painting, drawing, and graphic art
in Silesia and in the neighbouring countries in the 17th and 18th
centuries From 29 November to 1 December 2001 Wrocław hosted an international conference titled Willmann and others. Painting, drawing, and graphic art in Silesia and in the neighbouring countries in the 17th and 18th centuries, organised by the Wrocław Chapter of the Association of Art Historians and by the Institute of Art History of the University of Wrocław (conference director: Dr. Andrzej Kozieł). The conference coincided with the opening of the exhibition Willmann's Drawings. The Workshop of a Baroque Artist at the National Museum in Wrocław (the curator of the exhibition: Dr. Beata Lejman). The conference yielded thirty five papers contained in the volume, written by art historians, museum curators and conservators from Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary. The conference aimed at presenting the current research, exploring not only the oeuvre of Michael Willmann, the greatest Silesian artist of the early modern era, but also the art of the "others", the numerous, often forgotten painters, draughtsmen, and graphic artists active in Silesia during the Baroque period. Paradoxically, the greatest period in the history of painting in Silesia, marked by the activity of such outstanding artists as Michael Willmann, Karl Dankwart, Michael Rottmayr von Rosenbrunn, Georg Neunhertz or Franz Anton Sebastini, remains a little known chapter. The organisers of the conference do hope that the papers assembled in this volume are the first step in the direction of filling in this gap.
